After a little more than a year of presence on the market of Android tablets, Google has launched its new tablet Nexus 7. The official names are still Nexus 7, although it is not impossible that you hear about Nexus 7 2 or Nexus 7 2013. Anyway, the update was highly anticipated, and overall it has pleased the crowd. In this test, we will review what is new in this Nexus 7 tablet, how it compares to the previous one and it gives in real conditions of use. Are you ready? Here is the new Nexus 7 and Accessories for the new Nexus 7 are already available

Before throwing us headlong into this test, we’ll take a good look at the specifications to see what we may be entitled to expect the side of the user experience and determine the positioning on the Nexus 7 compared to other devices of the same class (including smartphones). As you can see above, the second Nexus 7 brings significant improvements in terms of screen and industrial design. It is much thinner than the original, and is more compact than the iPad mini, with the exception of thickness 1.45mm between them (the mini is much thinner when you hold it in hand). The Nexus 7 2 does not give the impression of being lighter than the mini iPad, but according to the specifications of the manufacturer, it is a little lighter. For my part, I found them quite similar, so that the weight is not really a factor. Rather, it is the rest of the user experience that makes the difference.
NEXUS 7 2 DESIGN:
The first contact we have with the new Nexus 7 is at the improved industrial design. The first thing I noticed is that the Nexus 7 2013 shall be much thinner than its counterpart in 2012. This immediately gives him the feeling more “premium” and easier to handle in general. The previous version was a little thick on the sides, but we easily forgave him this weakness, given its price so
low ($ 199). The general proportions are similar, but the new Nexus 7 is a little narrower and longer. If it was a more expensive tablet, it would be necessary to improve the thickness of the bezel up and down, but overall the Nexus 7 is pretty. ASUS has also decreased the metal edge, which I think adds a chic. When the tablet is off, the edges of the screen remain very discreet, which is nice, especially if you leave the tablet on a coffee table or something like that. Sony has managed to do something similar with their XPERIA series Z.
NEXUS 7 2 SCREEN
The Nexus IPS shield 7 2 is beautiful. The colors are bright and not too saturated, while blacks are very good, even if it is not comparable to AMOLED. This is a very impressive level of quality for a 7 “tablet that is charged $ 229, and so far this is one of the best quality / price we’ve seen reports. View photos or watch movies provides a great experience, and it contributes greatly to offer a good multimedia experience since we know that the S4 Pro processor is capable of great deal of the films.
The Nexus 7 2 can connect to a TV via HDMI, using a microUSB extension. Although Google did not mention that the HDMI output, it can also handle DVI and VGA with the appropriate adapters, but we have not been able to test it for ourselves. If ever there was a demand for it, we may make additional tests until we have a unit on hand. Let us know in the comments. The tablet has the same capacity “USB to HDMI” as that found on the Nexus 4 smartphone.
NEXUS 7 2 LTE CONNECTIVITY:
“T-Mobile, AT & T and Verizon LTE networks in one device” There is also an LTE version of the Nexus 7, 2013, available for those who need an Internet connection at any time. This is especially useful if you are a heavy user, because believe me, there is never a WiFi connection available if you really need, and create a wireless access point can be a good substitute, but we found that they are never as reliable as a broadband connection directly integrated into the device. If your provider allows you to turn the new Nexus 7 Hotspot LTE, this could be a great asset as the battery has a high degree of autonomy. Frankly, at its cost, it is probably best to buy a Nexus 7 2 than most 4G devices WiFi “hotspot”.
ANDROID 4.3 JELLY BEAN
Android 4.3 has been officially launched and has already been deployed on the Nexus devices. This new version of the OS brings practical changes to adapt the use of the tablet, as it provides a more complete support for multi-user profile, the Bluetooth low energy (4.0) and OpenGL ES 3.0 to match the latest advances in graphics processing units (GPU) capabilities.
ANDROID 4.3: PROFILES RESTRICTED USERS
Google introduced Android 4.2 user profiles and added more things in Android 4.3. The unique feature allows multiple people (family members, colleagues …) to create different profiles on the same shelf, with separate applications, different accounts, etc. What is new with Android 4.3, it is a restricted user profile which gives the administrator greater control over what users can do. As it is an application programming interface (API), other applications should be updated so that they can also use this feature. Restrictions can be applied to features such as “access to games,”
“access to user-generated content”, “device ON / OFF”, “web browser” etc … The obvious example is parental control, but there are many more situations in which you need to accentuate the level control device as in store demonstrations, or through loans device (hotels). The limited gaming access system can save you a lot of trouble because there are many documented cases in which children were able to go on the App Store and make purchases there. Given that “all sales are final,” you can imagine what kind of trouble it can cause. Now you can completely disable in-app purchase (IAP), which is still the best way to tackle the problem. In addition, intelligent filters that will prevent adult content from appearing, even if you allow web browsing. The restricted user profiles were introduced July 24, 2013 at an event in San Francisco.
BLUETOOTH 4.0 LE (LOW ENERGY)
While most people use Bluetooth to connect to headphones and speakers, there is also a whole world of low-power devices, always connected, which can communicate via Bluetooth. Biometric devices such as heart monitors are part of a rising trend of “wearable computing” (ready to wear devices) that will explode later this year and throughout the next two years. Bluetooth 4.0 has been designed to maintain constant communication without spending too much energy. This is the single most important improvement from the Bluetooth 3.0. That means letting the Bluetooth on permanently requires no more energy than before and you can now use these accessories always connected without thinking about the impact they could have on the battery life.
OPENGL ES 3.0
This is not really a “new” version of OpenGL, since GL ES 3.0 was introduced in August 2012, but its compatibility has been improved and the applications that use it begin to appear. To summarize, OpenGL ES 3.0 is more or less the equivalent of DirectX 9 and provides four major enhancements:
- Greater compatibility with the API
- Deep / Shadows (Shadow maps) maps textures
- Improved texture compression
- Of occlusion queries
‘API compatibility “, I really mean a” more restrictive “definition OpenGL specification. You may specifications are clear enough, but actually think they are open to interpretation (such as laws), and it may happen that the graphics chip vendors implement these rules in slightly different ways, creating compatibility issues from one device to another. The stricter requirements should reduce the likelihood of this happening. No. 2 and No. 3 are really associated with the new graphics capabilities. Cards shadows are a popular way to create shadows, including self-shadows (which occur when an object casts a shadow on itself). Improved texture compression allows developers to use larger textures with more details, but require more texture memory. This is even more important than the display resolution has increased. Finally, occlusion queries are nice but not really important. It is basically a feature that allows developers to send images via the graphics pipeline and equipment told them if the image was visible on the screen or not (as tested against the Z-buffer). While the idea is great, in practice, this leads to some latency in the overall conduct of the game, and the best developers are compelled to use software rendering low resolution to perform similar tasks. However, there
are many ways to use them, and if you’re curious, the GPU Gems chapter might enlighten you on the subject. (Warning, very geeky).
ENTERTAINMENT / MULTIMEDIA:
As we always say, when it comes to video playback, the screen quality and size greatly influence the user experience. Since the quality of the IPS screen is excellent, it remains for you to know what screen size you need to keep you happy. This is much better than what could be obtained with most smartphones – although the occasional Mega 6.3 is pretty close, but at a much higher price.
The sound quality of the headphones is excellent when using the right equipment (I tested it with a Bose QC2) and surround sound is impressive. There is a demo of Google Play surround sound, but I also played a few movies that we bought, like Transformers Dark of the Moon, and I was extremely satisfied with the quality surround sound. Google recently introduced 5.1 surround sound in the Google Play store, and is now re-encode the movies available. Our film Transformers 3 is a good opportunity to show that its works best with headphones. That’s pretty impressive, actually. Movies using audio CODEC HE-AAC and the Fraunhofer Institute have been integrated into Jelly Bean (Android 4.1). It is an extremely effective audio CODEC, even at relatively low flow levels. What’s new with the Nexus 7 (Android 4.3) is the addition of Cingo which is a technology that provides surround sound (as a post-treatment) for mobile devices. This was confirmed by Jan Nordmann, Director of Marketing and Business Development at Fraunhofer USA.
There are two speakers, one on each side of the tablet (in landscape mode). They work best on a hard surface as the sound can be reflected to the user. In this configuration, the sound is good, strong and has a certain “body.” Otherwise, you lose a little volume and the sound becomes more “superficial”. Conclusion: on a table, the sound is “very good”, otherwise it’s just “good.”
NEXUS 7 2 BATTERY
If you paid attention to the specifications above, you probably noticed that the Nexus 7 2 has about 8.7% of battery capacity in less than its predecessor. Curiously, Google says that despite this, it is even better in terms of range and can reach 9 hours of video playback and 10 hours of web browsing. With our standard battery tests, we determined that the assertion that Google battery has 9 hours of HD video is true, but this assumes that the video is downloaded to the tablet itself (which is normal for say, a long flight). If you broadcast videos WiFi (Google Play), autonomy drops to 7.14 hours. Google says that this tablet offers about 10 hours of surfing the web and your experience may vary depending on which site you go. For example, a very dynamic site like Facebook uses a lot more resources than a news site as Ubergizmo, so take this figure as a general indication of which can vary greatly depending on your own use. Anyway, know that you can browse the net for a long time and to have a better battery backup, you will surely need a good chargers too that could charge the battery to its full potential. The Nexus 7 2 comes default with wireless charging, which is very rare, so it is not a first for a camera $ 200. I have not seen specific Google accessory, but a station Qi wireless charging should work. If you’ve never tried, know that it is great for the living room or bedside table. In fact, I bet some people will use the 2013 as the Nexus 7 a chic alarm clock.
CONCLUSION ABOUT GOOGLE NEXUS 7 2
The new Nexus July 2013 does not disappoint. We knew it was coming, and that some things would be improved (1080p + screen), but it exceeded our expectations. In addition to the screen, improvements in industrial design and the overall responsiveness of the tablet are the most significant changes since the first iteration of Google. Last year, the Nexus 7 was successful as hoped because the experience was very good for the quality / price ratio user. The Nexus 7 2 also offers a good user experience, and when you take the price into account, then the new Nexus 7 becomes a must-have product. Competition in the tablet segment 7 “will be a little tough, because if you’re willing to spend $ 229, the Nexus 7 2 is almost the only device to offer this level of quality / price ratio.
