Speculation about the eventual configuration of the Nintendo NX is rife, but one particular red herring, which was presumed dead, has squirmed its way out of the grave.
Earlier this year an image of an oval-shaped controller circulated on Reddit, purporting to be for Nintendo’s new console. The minimalist device looked an unlikely fit, and it was rapidly uncovered to be a fake.
As Videogamer reports, the same controller has resurfaced, but this time oneBay, where some inglorious chancer is attempting to sell it for $10,000.
The controller is listed at $10,000 for the ‘buy it now’ option, otherwise bidding begins at $4,000.
There is no guarantee that this device is even the same one that surfaced on the internet months ago, never mind an actual product of Nintendo ingenuity. For all anyone knows, it could be an empty encasement hurried together in a vacuum former.
The wording of the listing description is short and suspicious in equal measure.
“Your bidding on an official Replica Nintendo NX development Controller. The unit is very rare as only 5 of these replicas were made in existence.”
Why the unit is called a ‘replica’ is unclear – either it’s a development controller or it isn’t. There are currently four users watching the item, and it has received no bids. There’s a decent chance that eBay will intervene at some point if it feels the product is unlikely to be genuine.
The authentic Nintendo NX is reportedly reaching the end of its development cycle and manufacturing lines are being primed for production later in the year. If all goes to plan, the new console will launch in March 2017.
